Chapter 8 - Landslides and a Beautiful Oasis on the Mountainside - The walk to Urdukas

We were now going to move up to Urdukas at 13,100 feet. Onoly a short walk of about 3-4 hours from Khorbutse, this campsite was a gem. In the middle of this bleak and majestic Baltoro, here was a a spot of greenery clinging to the side of the mountain hundreds of feet above the glacier. We were grateful that we had the rest of the day to soak in the scenery. That night however we were reminded that beauty and danger in the Karakoram are never too far apart. There was a thundering sound and we could hear a landslide it seemed right above us. But nothing happened and next morning we had all forgotten about it. As we were walking out, we again heard another thunder and saw a portion of the glacier dissapear into the glacial lake. Just a day before we had walked on the trail on its edge which had now slid under water. By this time altitude was taking a toll on other teams but we were thankfully immune.3 people from another trek had turned back and another had to be evacuated out because of suspected kidney stones. A grim reminder that anything can happen. in such a remote place.

  • The walk out of Khorbutse started off with a hike up the hill before we started to head for Urdukas about 3-4 hours away. This was going to be a short day and we were looking forward to it.

  • The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming! We got endless entertainment watching the Russian group roll in. They all carried 30 kg packs and had only a handful of porters. Apparently they were trying to do an expedition on the cheap. Their plan was to go towards K2 and detour over the Khalkal Glacier, over the Khalkal Pass then onto the Savoi Glacier skirting K2. They gave up in Concordia and took the shortcut back over the Gondogoro La Pass.

  • Ayub decided to put out dining table outside which was perfect. You couldn't ask for a better setting than Urdukas. The flies had disappeared by this time too. One of the other trekking parties came over to tell me how they liked our outdoor eating area but they were not allowed to change their setup. Some of the porters rest on the pulpit rock.

  • Another card game in the bright sun. While were sitting there we heard a bang and the Pink kitchen Tent bulged out the sides in places. It seemed the pressure cooker seal gave way and the lid went flying around the inside of the tent with Khalil and Asif and Zahoor running to get out of the way. Nobody was hurt by the boiling water and the heavy lid but it could have been bad.

  • The Brits practicing with ropes. They were planning to go back through the Gondogora La. A pass with some very steep sections for descent. We had decided against that given that we would have some young people with us. It was all for the better since we heard there were some close calls on descent for one of the groups.
