Our first stop was at the city of Medinah, where the Prophet migrated after facing great hostility in Makkah to his message. The center of town is the Prophet's Mosque, Masjid Nabvi. We were in Hotel Movenpick which was steps away from it. The people in Medina were very friendly the masjid was a perfect place for quite reflection and prayer.
Closeup of the architectural details.
Minarets from which the call to prayers(Azaan) is given five times a day. There was also an Azaan before the dawn prayers that confused us a few times and we would dash to the mosque only to find that we were early.
The cleaning crew at the mosque. Mostly Pakistanis, and Bengalis, they were always working hard and took great pride in their work. We always asked those guys for direction, firstly because they could speak Urdu and secondly they would go out of their way to help.
One of the many entrances to the mosque.
The lights on tall poles around the courtyard were well integrated into the design of the mosque and lit up the place at night.
The women ranged from fully covered to include black gloves to the next picture.
The african women were typically dressed in more brightly colored clothes and less restrictive in their behavior.
One of the Pakistani workers at the mosque. He told me to be careful since the security folks sometimes smash the cameras!
One of the beautifully decorated doors to the mosque. All decorations in Islam are abstract so as to not represent real objects or creatures. This has led to development of calligraphy and geometric devices that are elegant and beautiful.
The green dome of the mosque is the area where the Prophet's orginal mosque stood. Prophet Mohammed is one of the only prophets whose grave is known in modern times and is located close to the green dome.
